Nearly 100 attendees had the opportunity to meet with former New York Yankees Luis Sojo, Ramiro Mendoza, and Chuck Knoblauch, while supporting relief efforts for people affected by the devastating earthquake in Venezuela, Sojo's home country.

SAYREVILLE, NJ – Mama Dee's Empanadas will host former New York Yankees infielder Luis Sojo on Friday, Aug. 7, for a charity meet-and-greet benefiting relief efforts in Venezuela following the devastating earthquake in that country earlier this month.

Sojo, a native of Venezuela who won four World Series titles with the Yankees, now lives in the country and has been working directly with children who lost parents in the disaster, according to Mama Dee's owner Steven Ruiz.

"We have teamed up with former Yankee player Luis Sojo and his foundation along with the Nick Singh Foundation, to host a meet-and-greet and signing here at Mama Dee's Empanadas," said Ruiz. "Luis has been working tirelessly on the ground in Venezuela with children who have lost parents. We will have raffles, food and fun for a good cause."

The event, running from 6 to 8 p.m., costs $20 per person and includes an autograph and photo with Sojo. Ruiz said he expects to bring additional guests along, though those appearances were still being finalized.

Ruiz, who once dreamed of playing pro ball before a knee injury ended a tryout with the Minnesota Twins, spent 27 years working overnight shifts at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. He also played on a competitive paintball team, for which he was put in charge of cooking for the roughly 30 traveling members. The food caught on, and a field owner suggested he start selling it. Ruiz agreed, but only on the condition that proceeds go to charity rather than into his own pocket. It grew into larger fundraising efforts, including campaigns for flooding relief in Texas and, later, for Hurricane Maria recovery in Puerto Rico.

"The business started as a charity," Ruiz said. "I did not come in to sell."

A hospital colleague suggested selling empanadas commercially, which led Ruiz and his wife to buy their first food truck, funded, in part, with help from his mother. They outgrew that truck within six months and bought a larger one to keep up with demand. Later, Mama Dee's began a wholesale relationship with LIV Golf after a tournament stop in Bedminster. A staff member asked him what he actually enjoyed doing, and the conversation sparked a career change.

"I think it's time to invest in myself," Ruiz recalled telling his wife. The truck evolved into a Sayreville storefront, along with a wholesale arrangement to supply empanadas for Somerset Patriots games. Ruiz has built relationships with several current and former Yankees, including Oswaldo Cabrera, who has visited the Sayreville shop. At one point, Cabrera showed up in a walking boot rather than postpone an appearance, and he later arranged for Mama Dee's to cater a Somerset Patriots team dinner.

Those relationships, along with lessons learned navigating the logistics of past relief campaigns, shaped how the Aug. 7 fundraiser was organized. The connection to Sojo came through a mutual contact involved in sports ministry work in Venezuela. Ruiz said the goal is to make sure donations reach people on the ground.

(NSF), recently completed an outreach trip to Nicaragua that began with a single conversation and grew into a multi-community mission of hope.

The Nick Singh Foundation (NSF) just got back from traveling to the villages of Guadaloupe, La Ceiba, and Troilo, expecting to serve about 150 children. Instead, word spread quickly. Families arrived from neighboring areas. Children came hand-in-hand with siblings. Parents stayed, watching quietly. By the end of the week, more than 400 children and families had been served.

It started months earlier with a conversation, when Chris Song spoke about families he knew in Nicaragua, he talked about everyday realities. Children sharing what little they had. Communities stretching resources far beyond what they were meant to. Parents doing everything they could with almost nothing to spare. What he shared was simple, but it carried urgency.

Each village received hygiene kits, as many families lack consistent access to basic personal care items, so much so that volunteers took time to demonstrate how to use the supplies inside each bag. Toothbrushes were donated by The Joseph Toles Foundation®, with Northwell Health providing both toothbrushes and toothpaste. Sponsor funding made it possible to purchase soap, floss, and additional essentials, helping families care for themselves with dignity. Bread and drinks were shared in every village, and NSF also donated a full month’s worth of food to Iglesia Bautista ADULAM.

At one table, crayons and coloring took place. As children finished coloring, they began walking the crayons back and placing them into Emily Rivera’s hands, assuming they were meant to be returned. The expectation was not explained. It was learned. When Emily stopped them and told them the crayons were theirs to keep, the moment revealed a quiet truth about access, ownership, and the contrast many in the United States rarely have to confront.

Reflecting on that moment, Rivera shared,

“The kids thought the crayons had to be returned. They don’t have the privilege of being able to afford coloring sheets, let alone owning their own crayons. It was so eye-opening to see the difference compared to America.”

On the fields, sports carried that same weight of meaning. Baseball and soccer were familiar, but having materials they could reuse changed everything. With baseball equipment sponsored by Perez Bros Baseball and soccer balls from The Joseph Toles Foundation®, children joyfully played freely, knowing the equipment would remain in their communities. Nick Singh and Smith Brickner led baseball and soccer instruction, emphasizing fundamentals, teamwork, and confidence, not as a one-time experience, but as a foundation they could build on.

Brickner mentioned, “

Getting to teach soccer and baseball to the kids in Nicaragua was a great flashback to my childhood, when I had incredible people sacrificing their free time to teach me how to play each sport. Being in Nicaragua brought the little kid out of me again, only this time I was the one teaching and serving them. Seeing those kids with huge smiles on their faces after we finished playing was a full circle moment I’ll forever cherish.”

Music and movement soon filled the villages. Dance sessions led by Emily Rivera and Sara Song broke through language barriers. Musical chairs erupted in laughter. Mirror dancing and classic American dances such as the Hokey Pokey, Chicken Dance, Cupid Shuffle, and Cotton Eye Joe brought children and families together in shared joy.

Educational resources were woven throughout the week, including beginner Spanish-to-English books for each village. A 15-year-old local translator, Yeshua, played a key role in bridging conversations, demonstrating leadership and maturity well beyond his years.

Some moments went far beyond programming. A man whose leg had been broken because his wheelchair was no longer safe was gifted a new one, restoring mobility and security. Another individual facing a life-threatening medical condition was connected with a sponsor who committed to covering his treatment costs monthly, ensuring care would continue long after the team returned home.

Chris Song shared, “

It has been an absolute honor to stand alongside Nick and his incredible team at The Nick Singh Foundation. Together, we served four communities across Nicaragua, bringing hope, resources, and life-on-life fellowship to families in desperate need. Their love and compassion remind us that true impact comes when hearts and hands unite—transforming lives, one act of service at a time.”

This is why the story matters beyond Nicaragua, and why it matters on Long Island. The generosity that filled these villages began at home, through local donors, partners, and volunteers who chose to act. When communities like ours invest with humility and presence, the impact travels farther than Long Island, creating lasting change that reflects the values we carry wherever we go.

The outreach was made possible through the generosity of Perez Bros Baseball, The Joseph Toles Foundation®, Northwell Health, and Faizan Niazi, alongside additional sponsors and the dedicated support of volunteers Natanael Robles and David, and NSF board members Nick Singh, Emily Rivera, and Smith Brickner. Distribution was thoughtfully coordinated in partnership with local community leaders and through the trusted relationships of Chris Song, ensuring resources reached those who needed them most.

The journey was documented through storytelling and film, capturing dreams, resilience, and hope, with the intention of inviting others into the work still ahead. Because this was never meant to be a one-time trip.

“This trip reminded me that we should never underestimate the smallest acts of generosity, because what feels small to us can mean everything to someone else. What we expected to be 150 people became nearly 400, simply because word spread, and we were met with warmth, joy, and open hearts everywhere we went in Nicaragua. While we came believing we would make an impact, the truth is that the people and families we served left an even deeper mark on our team. That exchange of love, gratitude, and shared humanity is the heart of this foundation, and it’s something I’ll carry with me forever.”

As The Nick Singh Foundation looks forward, the mission remains clear: to enhance the lives of individuals and families in need by providing essential services, resources, and experiences that foster compassion and actively promote positivity across both local and global communities. The question now is not whether more can be done, but who will choose to be part of it.

A centerpiece of NSF’s contribution came from Long Island itself. Through the generosity of our community, we were able to gather and transport supplies from the U.S. to Sint Maarten, creating 10 teacher resource boxes distributed across the four schools. These boxes, designed specifically to support Cycle 1 classrooms, offered essential tools to strengthen teaching and day-to-day learning. Additionally, NSF was able to collaborate with

Seeing the children light up with joy as they received their school supplies, danced with passion, and engaged in activities that encouraged positivity and critical thinking was truly unforgettable.

Hearing the voices of our youth — their concerns, their ideas, their solutions — gives us fuel for future projects and opportunities to keep improving our island.

The local RISE Foundation and the US-based The Nick Singh Foundation joined to bring project-based learning and arts-based sessions, including dance and movement, to more than 225 children across Sint Maarten. The collaboration, which began earlier this year, focused on pooling resources and skills to better serve the island’s youth.

Students participated in a range of activities designed to inspire both critical thinking and creative expression. Brandon Street and Lilly Barkes of Listen to Our Future led a dynamic project-based learning session where students identified issues affecting their communities, from racism and bullying to sexual assault and community violence, and worked together to brainstorm and present solutions. Meanwhile, Tiffany Castillo of TM Talent NY facilitated a high-energy dance and movement program infused with positive affirmations and teamwork. The session left children filled with joy, laughter, while also strengthening their focus, coordination, and confidence.

Students were also treated to refreshments thanks to community support. Carl & Sons baked and donated more than 200 raisin buns, while Kam’s Trading provided juices, thoughtful touches that made the sessions feel extra celebratory. In addition, The Nick Singh Foundation brought supplies from the United States, which were used to create 10 teacher resource boxes

The success of the initiative was also made possible through strong local partnerships. Paradise Inn generously provided accommodation for the visiting volunteers, while Motorworld supported transportation needs with a donated vehicle. Pollos Hermanos treated the volunteers and RISE team to a well-earned meal during one of the full activity days. And Dr. Soc and Island 92 not only amplified the back-to-school drive on their media platform, but also offered behind-the-scenes encouragement and intangible support that helped make the project a success.

“We are deeply grateful to the RISE Foundation for inviting us to be part of such a meaningful initiative, and to our generous sponsors—Pollos Hermanos, Paradise Inn, Motorworld, and all the donors—who made this possible. Seeing the children light up with joy as they received their school supplies, danced with passion, and engaged in activities that encouraged positivity and critical thinking was truly unforgettable. These supplies ensure that students can enter the classroom without the burden of lacking resources, empowered to learn and thrive throughout the year. None of this would have been possible without our incredible volunteers—Brandon, Emily, Lilly, Tiffany, and Anthony—whose dedication brought the vision to life. At The Nick Singh Foundation, we believe in the power of collaboration, and this project was a beautiful reminder that when communities, organizations, and individuals unite, we can create lasting change and bring joy where it’s needed most.”

Hearing the voices of our youth — their concerns, their ideas, their solutions — gives us fuel for future projects and opportunities to keep improving our island. And seeing the pure energy and excitement from the kids reminded us why this work matters so much.”

Brandon Street and Lilly Barkes of Listen to Our Future led a dynamic project-based learning session where students identified issues affecting their communities, from racism and bullying to sexual assault and community violence, and worked together to brainstorm and present solutions.

GREAT BAY--The local RISE Foundation and the US-based The Nick Singh Foundation joined to bring project-based learning and arts-based sessions, including dance and movement, to more than 225 children across Sint Maarten. The collaboration, which began earlier this year, focused on pooling resources and skills to better serve the island’s youth.

To start the school year on a positive note, the sessions were offered free of charge to four institutions: ACE Foundation, Oranje School, Leonald Connor School, and 721 Kids Foundation. Together, over 225 children benefited from a fun and engaging start to the academic year.

"We’re not just handing out supplies, we’re building systems of support," said Priya Misir, Project Leader for the 2025 Back-to-School Drive of RISE Foundation. “This initiative is about honouring the work of our educators and uplifting students in a way that lasts beyond the first day of school.”

As part of this year’s enhanced strategy, RISE Foundation will deliver 10 Teacher Resource Boxes to selected primary schools. These boxes, filled with year-round classroom supplies, are designed to ease pressure on teachers and ensure students can access the materials they need.

           Why it matters

As economic pressures grow, this initiative recognizes both the role of educators as first responders and the barriers students face without essentials. By supporting teachers and providing school supplies, uniforms, fees, and haircuts, RISE Foundation is addressing educational inequality in a tangible, holistic way.

Shifting from one-time giveaways to a sustainable model is a bold step toward restoring dignity, promoting readiness, and ensuring every child – and every classroom – is equipped for success.

“Teachers often dip into their own pockets to support students,” added Misir. “We want to change that narrative – this year and every year.”

Would you plunge into shark-infested waters to raise money for a good cause? Well, 18 fundraisers (as of publication) have agreed to do just that. Shark Tank Showdown is taking place at the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead on April 1 to raise money for a group of local developmental disability support not-for-profit organizations. It should be noted upfront that while the event is being held on a date known for pranks, this is very much the real thing.

, featuring nine fundraisers affiliated with Rise and ten associated with People’s Arc. However, not all 18 of these selfless individuals will have to take the plunge. Only the best and worst performing fundraisers (i.e., the individual who raises the most money and the one who raises the least money from each organization) will need to swim with the sharks.

“We wanted to have competition at both ends of the contest,” said John McGuigan, CEO of People’s Arc, explaining this structure. “We didn’t want anybody at the bottom slacking off and thinking they could get away with it. So now you have people fundraising at the organization’s top and bottom. No passengers on this ride.”

McGuigan is one of the people who could be in trouble if he over- or underperforms in raising money. The other fundraisers include various Rise Life Services and People’s Arc staff members, friends, and allies who have volunteered or been peer pressured into raising money for the chance to get up close and personal with the sharks.

“Some of the people doing this volunteered, and some of the people doing this were peer pressured into it,” McGuigan added about the fundraiser selection process. “And I would be an example of that latter category.”

The public is encouraged to donate to the campaign drive to determine who will be sent down in the shark cage. Previous iterations of the event were held annually between 2014 and 2018, but this is the first time it has been brought back since the pandemic. The idea for the event initially came about when McGuigan and a colleague named JoAnn Vitale (who is also now a fundraiser for this event) were touring the Long Island Aquarium and noticed a cage suspended above the shark tank. One of them asked the aquarium employee giving their tour if the cage was real and they learned about the aquarium’s shark diving program.

They immediately knew it was an excellent idea for a fundraiser because, as McGuigan said: “there’s a lot of people who would love to throw a lot of other people in a shark tank.” The rest is history.

The donations will help fund Rise and People’s Arc’s vital work supporting people with disabilities in Suffolk County. These two organizations run housing programs, food pantries, suicide prevention efforts, arts programs, and other services for Suffolk residents with disabilities, including autism and cerebral palsy. McGuigan said that the two organizations run nearly 80 sites that serve residents with cognitive disabilities all over Suffolk, from the Nassau border to Greenport on the North Fork.

Evdos also specifically highlighted how the donations will help fund his organization’s outpatient clinic and the Program Without Walls (PWW) initiatives of both Rise and People’s Arc.

PWW initiatives provide individuals with disabled individuals with the opportunity to engage in art, music, dance, and more. He proudly added that both Rise and People’s Arc spend just 10% of their budgets on administrative costs, meaning that 90 cents of every dollar donated to Shark Tank Showdown will go directly into these various programs.

The nine fundraisers for Rise are JoAnn Vitale, Darryl Johnson, Earl Garrison, Erikka Silverman–Danielson, Father James Reiss, Lou Bosco, Rob Melnick, and Suffolk PBA. is also fundraising for Rise. The reception for the event will be held at the Long Island Aquarium on Tuesday, April 1, from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets are on sale now for $99 each. It will include a DJ, buffet, open bar, and even a garrison of Star Wars stormtrooper character impersonators.

Of course, the main draw is witnessing the chosen fundraisers, and News 12 journalists Jenn Seelig and Alex Calamia participate in three shark cage dives. The divers will be outfitted with wetsuits, scuba gear, and microphones so attendees can listen to their reactions. McGuigan joked, “We’ll be able to hear them scream, beg for help, cry for their mom, whatever reaction they have, we’ll be able to hear it all.” Each dive will be around 10 minutes long, and experienced divers will accompany the fundraiser and journalist divers to ensure safety.

The dives will occur in the 120,000-gallon Lost City of Atlantis Shark Exhibit. According to the aquarium’s website, this tank is home to sand tiger sharks, nurse sharks, a moray eel, and a Queensland grouper. The sand tiger sharks range from 8 to 10 feet long and can weigh up to 500 pounds. They are also known as ragged-tooth sharks due to the appearance of the seven rows of teeth in their mouths. Nurse sharks can grow to lengths of 10 to 14 feet and weigh between 165 and 230 pounds. These nocturnal creatures spend their days resting in crevices and caves before emerging at night, often in large numbers, to feed.

The divers will undoubtedly be safe. Neither species of shark is known to be aggressive toward humans unless provoked. However, they can certainly intimidate novice scuba divers who are raising funds for charity.

Tours and meet-and-greets with members of our community, potential vendor partners and other organizations are very important to us because it’s one of the most effective ways for people to learn about who we are in an immersive way. When we have visitors to the Bohemia location, they can witness Adult Day program and Children’s Services operations firsthand and meet some of the bright and smiling faces of the children and adults we support. We invite anyone who is interested in learning more about who People’s Arc of Suffolk is and what we do, to come for a tour and witness our mission in action!

Hofstra is coming off a dominating 93-68 win over Delaware on Thursday night as the Pride shot 60.3% from the field in routing the Blue Hens in their final visit to the Mack as conference rivals. Cruz Davis was spectacular for the Pride with career-highs of 28 points and 10 rebounds, while falling one assist shy of tying his career-high with seven assists. In total, Hofstra placed five in double figures with German Plotnikov also having an outstanding game with 14 points and seven rebounds. The Pride is 11-9 overall and 3-4 in CAA action heading into Saturday's encounter.
